Throwback: Laura Woods’ Unforgettable Eric Bristow Story

Years ago, during Laura Woods’ time covering darts, she found herself on the receiving end of one of Eric Bristow’s most memorable offers — and it had absolutely nothing to do with what was happening on the oche.

Looking back, it is the kind of story that feels perfectly suited to Bristow’s larger-than-life personality.

The five-time world champion was famous for his swagger, confidence and blunt sense of humour. Even after his playing days were over, that personality remained a huge part of his appeal around the darts scene.

For Woods, who spent more than a decade working in darts broadcasting, Bristow was one of the characters she particularly remembered fondly. She later described him as someone she genuinely missed after his death in 2018.

On one occasion, she was outside a hotel near Alexandra Palace with Bristow when he noticed that something was bothering her.

Woods recalled the moment during her appearance on the Double Tops podcast in May 2026.

“We were having a cigarette outside that awful hotel next to Ally Pally,” Woods said.

Bristow apparently noticed that Woods was not quite herself and asked whether she was alright.

Woods initially tried to brush it off.

“And I was like, ‘Yeah, fine.’”

But Bristow wasn’t convinced.

According to Woods, he quickly worked out what had happened.

“He was like, ‘Broken up with your fella, haven’t you?’”

She confirmed that she had.

That was when Bristow delivered the line that turned an ordinary conversation into a story Woods would remember years later.

“He was like, ‘Do you want me to break his legs?’”

Woods’ response was just as telling.

“He’s actually a really nice guy, so don’t worry about it.”

It was an extraordinary thing to offer, even if it was delivered in the unmistakable joking and protective style for which Bristow was known.

Looking back, the story is less about the literal offer and more about the character behind it.

Bristow, nicknamed “The Crafty Cockney,” had built a reputation as one of darts’ great personalities long before Woods began covering the sport.

He won the World Championship five times and became one of the defining figures of darts during its rise in popularity.

By the time Woods knew him, Bristow was no longer competing at the highest level, but his presence around the sport remained unmistakable.
