James Wade has added his voice to the growing debate surrounding Luke Humphries and Luke Littler, following Gary Anderson’s impassioned defense of Humphries. Anderson recently spoke out, claiming that Humphries, the reigning world champion, has not been given the respect he deserves, largely due to the meteoric rise of 17-year-old Luke Littler.
Humphries has had an incredible two years, winning multiple major titles in addition to his World Championship victory. Yet, Anderson feels that Humphries has been unfairly “overlooked” as attention has shifted to Littler, who made headlines by finishing runner-up at the World Darts Championship and later winning Premier League Darts.
“It’s not just about being world champion,” Anderson said. “Look at what Luke has won over the past two years. He’s taken almost every title in sight. He’s not just a world champion by chance; he’s worked for everything he’s achieved. Yet, people continue to overlook him, which I think is complete nonsense. He’s earned all of it, and it’s time he gets the respect he deserves.”
Anderson went on to express his frustration with the media and fans who seem to be focusing more on Littler’s rise than on Humphries’ consistent dominance. “Every time, it’s always about someone else, and Luke just quietly goes about his business. He handles it well, but I’m sure deep down, it must frustrate him,” he added.
James Wade, who admits he has a rocky relationship with Anderson, found himself agreeing with his rival’s sentiments. Following his victory over Gerwyn Price at the World Grand Prix, Wade echoed Anderson’s praise for Humphries.
“Me and Gary don’t get on well, but I have to agree with him on this,” Wade said. “Luke Humphries is probably one of the best world champions we’ve ever had, maybe second or third-best. He’s won almost everything, before and after the World Championship. I don’t think people appreciate just how good he is.”
Wade continued, lamenting how Humphries hasn’t received the recognition he deserves. “The last champion we had at this level was Michael van Gerwen, and before him, Phil Taylor. Luke is doing incredible things, and it’s sad that it’s going unnoticed. We need to celebrate his achievements more.”
Both Wade and Anderson agree: Humphries’ accomplishments should be acknowledged, and he deserves more respect for his dominance in the sport.
