Carlos Alcaraz recently reflected on his most cherished memory with Rafael Nadal following the tennis legend’s announcement of his retirement. The 37-year-old Nadal revealed on Thursday that he would be stepping away from professional tennis, marking the end of an iconic career.
Alcaraz, like many in the tennis world, expressed sadness over the news. The young Spaniard, now 21, has long admired Nadal and could potentially team up with him for Spain in what might be Nadal’s final Davis Cup appearance. This would be a fitting send-off for the left-hander, who has been an inspiration to many, including Alcaraz.
Alcaraz first heard about Nadal’s retirement just before his own match in the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals, where he faced Tomas Machac. The announcement left him and his team, including coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, in shock. As a four-time Grand Slam champion, Alcaraz has always looked up to Nadal as a role model.
When asked about his favorite memory with Nadal, Alcaraz shared a heartwarming moment from when he was just 15 years old. “Apart from watching him win all the tournaments, I have a special memory. I helped him film a commercial. That was the first time I saw him in person, and it was really special for me,” Alcaraz recalled.
Though their careers have taken different paths, this shared experience remains a treasured memory for Alcaraz, underscoring the deep respect and admiration he has for Nadal.
