Carlos Alcaraz has had a remarkable 2024 season, winning two Grand Slam titles at just 21 years old, but he will not finish the year as world No. 1. Despite his triumphs at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, his inconsistency and fierce competition, particularly from Jannik Sinner, have prevented him from securing the top ATP ranking. While it seems natural that a player winning two majors in a season would end the year as No. 1, tennis history shows that this scenario, though rare, has occurred before.
Looking back, the first instance of a player winning two Grand Slams but not finishing as world No. 1 dates to 1977. That year, Guillermo Vilas won Roland Garros and the US Open, yet never even reached No. 1, largely due to inaccuracies in the ATP scoring system at the time. Instead, Jimmy Connors ended the year as the top-ranked player. A similar situation happened in 1978 when Björn Borg, despite winning both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, was denied the year-end No. 1 spot by Connors’ consistency and victory at the US Open.
In 1982, it was Connors himself who won Wimbledon and the US Open but couldn’t overtake John McEnroe, who, without winning a Grand Slam that year, claimed the top ranking by excelling in other tournaments. Another notable case occurred in 1989 when Boris Becker won Wimbledon and the US Open but was outranked by Ivan Lendl, whose consistency and victory at the Australian Open secured him the No. 1 position.
Fast forward to 2016, Novak Djokovic had a stellar first half of the year but lost momentum, allowing Andy Murray, who had a remarkable second half of the season, to finish as No. 1. The closest parallel to this year’s situation, however, occurred in 2017 when Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal each won two Grand Slam titles. Despite Federer’s resurgence, Nadal’s consistency earned him the top spot.
The last similar instance happened just two years ago, in 2022. Rafael Nadal won the Australian Open and Roland Garros, but injuries derailed his season, allowing Alcaraz to finish as No. 1.
Alcaraz’s 2024 season adds another chapter to this rare but not unprecedented scenario in tennis. His rivalry with Jannik Sinner has captivated the sport, and their battle for supremacy promises to define the next era of tennis. Whether another contender will rise to challenge them remains to be seen.
