Jalen Brunson had already enjoyed the kind of year most NBA players could only dream about. He led the New York Knicks to their first NBA championship since 1973, earned NBA Finals MVP honors and became one of the biggest names in New York sports.
Then he walked onto the Saturday Night Live stage and found another way to make Madison Square Garden part of the conversation.
During his opening monologue as host of SNL’s 52nd season premiere, Brunson joked about returning to the Knicks’ home court after the arena had recently been transformed into the wedding venue for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. His timing was perfect because Madison Square Garden has become an even bigger part of Brunson’s story after the Knicks’ historic championship run.
“The exact spot where Taylor and Travis got married,” Brunson said while talking about getting back to Madison Square Garden.
It was a simple line, but it connected several of the biggest entertainment and sports stories surrounding the Garden this year. And considering Brunson had previously been dragged into questions about the celebrity couple’s wedding, it was another example of the Knicks star having some fun with a storyline that has followed him for months.
Jalen Brunson’s SNL Moment Had Plenty of Knicks Flavor
Brunson’s SNL appearance was already significant before the jokes began.
He became the first active NBA player since LeBron James to host the legendary late-night program, while also bringing four of his Knicks teammates into the show’s opening monologue. Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, O.G. Anunoby and Josh Hart were all part of the action.
That made the appearance feel less like Brunson simply stepping outside basketball and more like a celebration of the Knicks’ remarkable 2026 season.
The Knicks had just completed one of the most important championship runs in franchise history, winning the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs in five games. Brunson was named Finals MVP, and his teammates clearly weren’t going to let him have the SNL stage without reminding him of some of the more dramatic moments from that run.
Anunoby, in particular, brought up Brunson’s controversial late-game miss from Game 4 of the Finals.
“Remember in Game 4 when you took that shot at the end, and you missed it?”
That moment eventually became part of the championship story because Anunoby followed the miss with a last-second tip-in that helped secure the game for New York. When Anunoby described the moment, he simply added, “That was awesome.”
For Knicks fans, it was the kind of self-deprecating humor that makes the championship celebration even more enjoyable. Brunson can laugh about the miss now because the bigger picture ended with a championship ring and Finals MVP trophy.
The Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Connection Goes Back Further
The Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce reference also had more history behind it than just one SNL joke.
Madison Square Garden became a major part of the Swift-Kelce story after their wedding there on July 3. But Brunson had already been asked about the possibility of the Garden becoming their wedding venue before the ceremony actually happened.
In June, Brunson was asked whether Madison Square Garden would make a good wedding venue for the couple. His response was characteristically brief before he redirected the conversation.
“Great venue,” Brunson said at the time. “A lot of great things happen there, you know? When we’re down one and you miss a wide-open layup.”
That was an obvious reference to one of the Knicks’ memorable Finals moments, and Josh Hart reportedly laughed at the reference.
Weeks later, the wedding actually took place at the Garden.
Brunson was also asked afterward whether his championship run might somehow have influenced the decision to use Madison Square Garden. His response showed that he wasn’t taking the connection too seriously.
“Maybe. Maybe,” Brunson said. He then explained that wedding plans were probably made well in advance and noted how tightly scheduled the Garden is.
There was also considerable reporting around whether Brunson and the Knicks’ starting five had been invited to the wedding. Brunson later said he did not attend and indicated that he found out about the invitation reports the same way much of the public did.
That makes the SNL joke even better. Brunson has spent months being asked about a wedding that he ultimately wasn’t part of, so turning the entire situation into a punchline was probably the easiest way to handle it.
Madison Square Garden Has Become Part of Brunson’s Story
There is something fitting about Brunson making the joke on SNL.
For Knicks fans, Madison Square Garden is not simply another NBA arena. It is the place where Brunson and his teammates finally ended one of the longest championship droughts in franchise history.
Now, only months later, the same building has also been at the center of one of the biggest celebrity events of the year.
Brunson’s joke worked because he understood exactly what the Garden represents to him. It is where the Knicks made history, where he became an NBA champion and where he will eventually return for another season with a championship banner hanging above him.
The timing is especially interesting because Brunson’s summer has been anything but ordinary.
He went from leading the Knicks through the Finals to being named Finals MVP, then became part of the wider Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce conversation, and eventually landed one of the most unusual opportunities available to an active NBA player: hosting SNL.
The Knicks Came Along for the Ride
Perhaps the best part of the SNL appearance was that Brunson didn’t make the moment entirely about himself.
Towns, Bridges, Anunoby and Hart all got opportunities to participate, turning the opening monologue into something of a Knicks reunion. Towns even asked whether someone could foul out of SNL, leading to the response, “So I can be here, like, the whole show? Nice.”
Hart also brought up Brunson leaving $113 million on the table when he signed with New York, while Bridges and Anunoby had their own jokes aimed at Brunson.
It was exactly the kind of chemistry Knicks supporters have come to expect from this group.
And that chemistry matters. Basketball teams rarely win championships without strong relationships away from the court, and seeing the Knicks teammates joking together on one of America’s biggest entertainment stages offered another glimpse into the personality behind the championship team.
Brunson’s SNL appearance ultimately wasn’t about Taylor Swift or Travis Kelce. The wedding reference was simply one funny part of a much bigger night.
The real story was a championship-winning Knicks captain stepping outside his comfort zone, bringing his teammates with him and showing a national audience the personality that New York fans have embraced.
Still, the Taylor and Travis joke was perfectly timed.
Madison Square Garden has hosted championships, legendary performances, historic basketball moments and now a celebrity wedding that attracted worldwide attention. Brunson has a particularly strong connection to that building after everything the Knicks accomplished this year.
So when he returns to the court and looks around the Garden, there will be plenty of basketball memories waiting for him.
And, apparently, one very famous wedding memory too.
